holder thinks that the responded to his popularity my campaign was not about flyers holder said it was about people knowing me and trusting me there was also some controversy in the external affairs race holder's oppo nent karen fairey went on 102 jamz fm morning show on march 27 the day of the elections and criticized the student government association and its relationship with the student body those who heard fairey's comments on the radio may have been inclined to vote for holder 443 39 percent of the votes while soaking in rhe realization of her win foster had these thoughts it feels great she said of the victory it's good to know that the student body supports me in my efforts to make a&t extremely successful in one of the biggest upsets of the night brian barbados holder defeat ed karen fairey in the race for vice president of external affairs with 56 percent of the student vote what made holder's win such an upset was the fact that he did not have the flyers or the gimmicks of the other candidates and the students responded the race for vice president of internal affairs was won by paulette foster who received 698 votes 61 percent while her opponent jose v barros received however in some of the major exec utive races there were no surprises at all the 2002-2003 sga president is nashett garrett garrett received 700 votes 60 percent while her opponent william levette received 465 votes or 40 percent of the total this year's sga elections had all two of the main elements for a movie sur prise and drama hall of fame ceremony honors service in defense speech and communication hold 10th nabj short course please see results page 2 monday april 1 2002 volume 76 no 18 crowned in sga copyricxht 2002 randy st.clair editor-in-chief by t.j moore register staff index 2 e-vibes 6 news opinion 4 sports 7 randy st.clair/register staff members of the n.c a&t rotc were inducted into the hall of fame on march 28 two rotc graduates from n.c a&t were honored for their commit ment and courage in the united states armed forces by being inducted in the a&t hall of fame retired col alfred a scenck and col joyce m waller were recognized for what the guest speaker retired brig gen clara l adams-edner called the five cornerstones of serving in defense — commitment concern candor courage and caring african americans have always par ticipated in defense of military even though they weren't always appreciat ed said adams-edner africans americans have made tremendous tributions to defense by their commit ment to excellence and determination to succeed by their concern and interest in knowing what's going on around them by their candor by their courage and by their ability to care the ceremony was the fifth of its kind aggie softball is young but hopes to mature in meac play page 7 please see fame page 3 verge modeling troup wins first place at modeling competition page 6 schenk who earned a bachelor of sci and was a joyous one as military per sonnel and family members gathered in harrison auditorium to see two of a&t's most dedicated people to serve in defense honored meanwhile in the newsroom group b went through the tv experi ence the professionals guided the stu dents as they went through the news gathering production and editing process members of group b ventured out of the confines of crosby hall to produce and film stories around campus and throughout greensboro later in the day the students had a chance to audition for anchor of a half hour news program this optional event had positions for two news anchors sports anchors and weathercasters short course lead instructor anthony wilson expressed surprise at the skills that the students possessed we have a lot of very talented people in the program they have more talent that we expected he said because of this talent for the first time in the his tory in the program the short course would tape two news broadcasts instead of one on day one the students were divided into two groups group a headed straight to the classroom while group b went to the nabj newsroom group a spent three hours learning the fundamentals of news writing and production techniques from profession al producers in the newswriting ses sion the students learned how to build an interesting factual news story as quickly as possible in production the students learned how to use graphic tools to make a newscast more visually appealing n.c a&t's department of speech and communication hosted the 10th annual national association of black journalist nabj broadcast short course march 20-23 in crosby hall for three grueling days a&t's broad cast journalism students and students from other universities received a taste of the pressures and the routines of a real television station please see nabj page 3 state university the register north carolina a&t www ncatregister com by t j moore register staff writer sharonda eggleton/register staff from left to right - nashett garrett won in her quest for sga president brooke myatt was crowned miss a&t and without a campaign brian barbados holder won in the race for vice president for external affairs and paulette foster won convinc ingly over jose barros for vice president of internal affairs the elections were filled with surprises the race for miss a&t wasn't as close as people had anticipated delta sigma theta member melissa slade was arguably the favorite in the race but lost in a landslide to brooke myatt myatt had an an overwhelming 815 votes 61 percent to slade's 30 percent after myatt gained her composure she had this to say about her win words can't describe what it feels like to know that all this hard work that i and my wonderful teammates have put into allowed me to be crowned miss a&t said myatt i thank god for the way that he has worked miraculously students to that
