of disability register contributor chantel m balknight q what are your goals for student affairs a one goal i have for student affairs is to be immediately responsive to the needs of our students not just academ ically but also their personal well-being their participation in the community and success with the college experience farmers gain at local curb market business a customer looks at a variety of canned preserves during a weekday afternoon at the nearby farmers curb market where did you attend school a i received my bachelor's degree from michigan state in communica tions with a concentration in speech pathology and audiology my minor was in k-8 education i got my master's in counseling from michigan state also concentrating in student services my ph.d came from the university of michigan-ann arbor and i got that in higher education support services reviews student's cases for disability support in order to doctor q if you were not involved in higher education what would you be doing a originally i think i was designed to be heavily involved in community development however education has provided me with the tools to do my mission through this calling but hobby wise i would be involved in architec ture i worked closely with my father in architecture in my spare time i design houses maybe i would have been a q can you tell us a litde about your family a my daughter is a senior at georgia tech majoring in pre-med my son is in the hotel management business with his father in michigan i also have an adopted daughter who has her own public relations firm in los angeles q what are some of the obstacles that you had to overcome a at the time when i left north carolina i left to eliminate obstacles of segregation and high levels of scrutiny on any given saturday morning the greensboro farmers curb market is the busiest place in the city the smell of fresh-cut flowers and homemade cakes greet you as you walk in the door the greensboro farmers curb market is a facility of the city of greensboro parks & recreation department located on the corner of lindsey and yanceyville streets near the a&t campus it is designed to give local farmers bakers and craftsman who do not already have a business an opportu nity to market their products when walking along the second aisle you come across a rather strange-look ing booth under the sign goat lady cheese on the table are free samples of goat cheese and crackers to spread the cheese on go ahead try one it's good no added chemicals it comes straight from my goat says lee tate the maker of goat lady cheese tate sells goat cheese goat milk and many other natural home-grown prod ucts i have quite a few customers here she says i get the majority of my customers in the summer i make a pretty good amount of money off of my goat cheese tate says that she enjoys the atmos phere at the farmers market more than anything the people who come here are great most of them come week after week not only to shop but also to enjoy the atmosphere she says approximately 87 vendors are regis tered with the farmers market although they have enough space for about 162 vendors everyone loves the market we've had crowds anywhere between 500 and 600 people depending on the time of year says larry smith market manag er we try to offer the community something that the entire family can enjoy and that is affordable the greensboro farmers market takes you back in time it provides a culinary link to the past as shoppers buy fruits and vegetables to prepare foods the way their mothers and grandmoth ers did before them not only will you find fresh produce at the farmers market but also the ambience of locally grown and home made goods and the nostalgia of a his torical landmark although the market is open year round the majority of the vendors are there between april and september the hours of operation are tuesdays and thursdays between the hours of 2:30 and 6:30 p.m and saturdays from 6 a.m disabilities act or the ada included are the university of florida and n.c a&t the act provides guidelines that clear ly define the word disability according to the ada a condition that substan tially limits a major life activity such as walking talking learning hearing or seeing will be provided with support services included in this definition are students who suffer from chronic health epilepsy diabetes hiv etc and mobility problems some of the services that a&t's office of disability support services provide are career and academic coun seling moving classes to a more acces sible location staff writer current employees anyone it depends on how deep the budget cuts are said jefferies we will try to accommodate the budget freezes with vacant positions we hope not to lay off at this point no undergraduate or n.c a&t's administration is wrestling with the proposed state budget freezes in hopes of softening the impact that the cuts will have on undergraduate and graduate studies and faculty positions according to paula jefferies interim vice chancellor for business and finance a&t is projected to lose 4 rnillion of state appropriations for the 2001-2002 fiscal year which equals out to 6.559 percent of the estimated budget as a result of the freezes an estimat ed 22 faculty positions and 35 to 40 sup port positions will be eliminated a&t's administration hopes that the official numbers would not force them to affect a&t works students of disabled to meet needs
